#4 of 9 hotels in Swatara by Axel's take. Swatara is #4 of 8 places to stay in Harrisburg. The best hotels in Swatara, ranked · Where to stay in Harrisburg

Axel's take: 8.0/10

A strong family pick for the pools and friendly staff, not polished rooms. An older, family-focused 3-star hotel with extensive recreation facilities, scored for what it is.

Red Lion is an older, family-focused 3-star hotel that earns its keep with recreation rather than stylish rooms. We'd pick it for a Hershey trip with kids: indoor and seasonal outdoor pools, a playground, games and sports courts give families plenty to do between outings. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff and spacious rooms. Free parking helps, and guests put Hersheypark roughly a 20-minute drive away.

The trade-off is condition: recent reviews repeatedly describe dated furnishings, worn finishes and occasional odors or cleaning lapses, alongside plenty of clean, comfortable stays. Breakfast costs extra. The hotel's website lists the sports lounge as temporarily closed and warns of limited restaurant hours; the outdoor pool is seasonal. We'd skip it for a polished couples' getaway, but it's a strong practical choice for families who will use the facilities.

Best for: Families visiting Hersheypark; Kids who enjoy pools and playgrounds; Road-trippers traveling with pets
Watch out for: Dated rooms and occasional cleaning lapses; Sports lounge listed as temporarily closed; Seasonal outdoor pool and limited restaurant hours
Location: Car-friendly Harrisburg base; guests report roughly 20 minutes to Hersheypark, with dining nearby.
Rooms: Spacious, with microwaves and mini-fridges, but worn furnishings and dated bathrooms recur in reviews.
Cleanliness: Generally positive feedback, tempered by repeated reports of stains, odors and missed cleaning.
Service: Friendly, accommodating staff are the most consistent strength across guest-review sites.
Amenities: Indoor and seasonal outdoor pools, playground, games, sports courts and gym suit active families.
Fees and surprises: Parking is free; breakfast and pets cost extra; airport shuttle is subject to availability.
