Axel's take on Södermalm: #2 of 8 in Stockholm, 8.4/10
Choose Södermalm when eating, wandering and evenings out shape your trip. Södermalm combines excellent access, plentiful dining and strong neighborhood character, though hotel value is middling and busy bar streets demand care.
Södermalm is the strongest choice if the hours between sightseeing stops matter as much as the sights themselves. Mariatorget, Götgatan and the streets around Nytorget offer cafés, independent shops and plenty of reasons to stay out for dinner. Its nightlife spans relaxed bars, concert venues and LGBTQ favorites rather than one single entertainment strip.
Choose your street, not just the island: Medborgarplatsen and quieter residential blocks deliver different nights. Slussen is particularly useful for exploring, but construction remains active there as of October 2026. Pick farther from the works if disruption would bother you, and stay nearer a station if you dislike long walks across a large neighborhood.
- Best for: nightlife, food lovers, travelers on a budget, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You require consistently quiet main streets; You want every major museum nearby on foot
- Getting around: Red and Green metro lines serve Slussen, with further stations across Södermalm; Gamla Stan is walkable from its northern streets; ARN commuter train 40 runs directly to Stockholm södra, unlike the airport express.
- After dark: Bars cluster around Götgatan, Medborgarplatsen, Mariatorget and Nytorget; noise-sensitive visitors should avoid the busiest bar frontages.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $191 a night · usually 7% under the public rate
Where to stay in Stockholm: every neighborhood ranked
Where to look in Södermalm
- Mariatorget and Swedenborgsgatan. Start around the square for café stops and neighborhood wandering; suits travelers whose evenings revolve around dinner rather than clubs. Hotels here: Hotel Rival, Hotel Hornsgatan.
- Medborgarplatsen. A lively neighborhood hub for travelers who want activity close by rather than a secluded residential retreat. Hotels here: NOFO Hotel, WorldHotels Crafted, Scandic Malmen.
- Tantolunden, Zinkensdamm edge. Favor this park edge for green breaks and unhurried walks; a better fit for families than nightlife-first stays. Hotels here: Hotel Zinkensdamm.
How to choose
- Choose Hotel Rival if you value standout service and included cooked-to-order breakfast; air-conditioning depends on room category.
- Choose Hotel Zinkensdamm if park-side quiet and practical family facilities outweigh a ten-minute walk to the metro.
- Choose Rygerfjord Hotel & Hostel if you want one of the cheapest stays here and can accept tiny boat cabins and noise.
What paying more buys
Rygerfjord is much cheaper than most here, but its tiny cabins and boat noise are real compromises. Hotel Zinkensdamm buys private-bathroom hotel rooms and park-side calm; Hotel Rival costs more again for standout service and included cooked-to-order breakfast. Rival's premium is harder to justify if you mainly want somewhere to sleep between outings. Typical rates with Axel here run from $60 a night at Rygerfjord Hotel & Hostel to $442 at Hotel Hornsgatan (last 30 days).
