Axel's take on Jing'an: #2 of 8 in Shanghai, 7.8/10
Shanghai's best all-round balance of transport, shopping and neighborhood evenings. Outstanding neighborhood character, strong hotels and useful transport put Jing'an second, held back chiefly by weaker value.
Jing'an works because the useful and the enjoyable overlap. Around Jing'an Temple and West Nanjing Road, major stores and office towers sit beside historic lanes, while Yuyuan Road offers a gentler direction for wandering. The revived retail streets around Yongyuan Road add another reason to explore beyond the main malls.
Residents answering where-to-stay questions regularly favor the temple side of Jing'an for its restaurants, bars and access to the Former French Concession. The district name alone is not enough: check the actual street and station. Skip it only if waking beside the river is more important than an adaptable everyday base.
- Best for: first-time visitors, travelers without a car, shopping, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You must wake beside the river; You expect every Jing'an address to be near the temple
- Getting around: Jing'an Temple has Lines 2/7/14, and West Nanjing Road has 2/12/13; historic streets are walkable south and west; Line 2 goes directly to PVG and SHA Terminal 2.
- After dark: Restaurants and bars make this a practical evening base; residents prefer it to People's Square for neighborhood life.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $312 a night

How to choose
- Choose Jing An Shangri-La, Shanghai if generous rooms, helpful service and Kerry Centre convenience justify spending more.
- Choose Swissotel Grand Shanghai if you want temple-side convenience and a pool for less, accepting dated interiors.
- Choose THE ONE Shanghai Downtown, Vignette Collection by IHG if your family needs separate living space, laundry and kitchen facilities; confirm renovation disruption.
What paying more buys
Swissotel Grand offers spacious rooms, a pool and temple-side convenience for less than most here. Jing An Shangri-La adds more dependable luxury and strongly praised service; pricier PuLi emphasizes design and spa time, subject to renovation checks. If you will spend your days out, Swissotel's location and facilities make the upgrade less compelling. Typical rates with Axel here run from $110 a night at Jin Jiang Tower to $553 at The PuLi Shanghai (last 30 days).
