Axel's take on Former French Concession: #4 of 8 in Shanghai, 7.5/10
Choose leafy streets, independent dining and evenings that unfold on foot. Leafy streets and the strongest value compensate for variable station access and a much thinner selection of reviewed hotels.
Around Anfu, Wukang, Donghu and Fuxing roads, the Former French Concession offers plane trees, lane houses, small shops and places to linger over coffee or dinner. The Hengfu streets also bring music institutions and architectural interest into ordinary neighborhood walks. Stay here if experiencing Shanghai's streets matters as much as checking off its landmarks.
Visitors particularly praise the dining and evening atmosphere around Fumin Road and South Shaanxi Road. The trade-off is that this is a broad neighborhood, not one interchangeable location: some addresses involve a meaningful station walk. Skip it if direct Pudong airport rail or waterfront views are essential.
- Best for: couples, nightlife, food lovers, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You require direct rail to Pudong Airport; You want major skyline sights outside your door
- Getting around: Depending on the street, use Changshu Road 1/7, Shanghai Library 10 or South Shaanxi Road 1/10/12; explore the lanes on foot; SHA is direct on Line 10, while PVG requires a transfer from Line 2.
- After dark: Visitors report lively dining and drinking around Fumin and South Shaanxi roads; individual residential lanes feel very different.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $127 a night
