Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong heritage-luxury choice, with renovation plans worth checking before booking. a historic five-star Art Deco hotel on the Bund, scored for what it is.

Fairmont Peace Hotel is a historic five-star on the Bund, and we'd choose it for Shanghai character rather than contemporary minimalism. Recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Accor guests consistently praise spotless, spacious rooms and attentive staff; breakfast also earns strong marks. The Art Deco interiors, nightly jazz and complimentary heritage tour make the history part of the stay, not just the address.

The trade-offs deserve attention at this level. Some recent guests report uneven restaurant and terrace service, and not every room has a worthwhile view. Accor has announced renovation while the hotel remains open, ahead of a planned Raffles debut in 2027; the current work schedule and disruption aren't clear, so confirm directly. We'd skip it if you want guaranteed freedom from building works or sleek, newly finished luxury.

• Best for: heritage and Art Deco enthusiasts; first-time Shanghai sightseers; couples seeking classic luxury

• Watch out for: confirm renovation work affecting your dates; river views depend on room category; occasional restaurant and terrace service lapses

• Location: Right on the Bund at Nanjing Road East, excellent for waterfront walks and sightseeing but busy outside.

• Rooms: Spacious, comfortable and traditionally styled; some rooms face walls rather than the river.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across recent reviews, with Expedia scoring cleanliness 9.8/10.

• Service: Warm housekeeping and capable concierge teams draw repeated praise; dining service is less consistent.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, gym, spa, nightly Jazz Bar performances and a complimentary guided heritage tour.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion varies; guests report Jazz Bar minimum spending requirements. Confirm renovation impacts before booking.
