Axel's take on South Shore (Conchas Chinas to Mismaloya): #5 of 6 in Puerto Vallarta, 4.5/10
Choose the south shore for coves and quiet, not effortless town access. The South Shore has strong hotels and secluded coastal settings, but poor town access, limited doorstep amenities and weak value make it a specialist choice.
South of Old Town, the coast changes into jungle-backed slopes, rocky coves and separated stretches of beach. Conchas Chinas offers hillside stays close to town, while Mismaloya feels more like a village-and-beach holiday. Los Arcos adds a strong reason to choose this coast if snorkeling and time on the water matter.
These places do not offer interchangeable stays. A Conchas Chinas address can involve steep cobbled climbs; farther south, Highway 200 becomes your link to almost everything beyond your beach. Do not assume a continuous coastal walking route or restaurants outside every entrance. Choose it for a retreat, and skip it if you want transport-free evenings in town.
- Best for: couples, luxury travelers, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You want car-free evening wandering; Steep paths or roadside access are difficult
- Getting around: C01 Mismaloya/Boca buses follow Highway 200, but the walk to stops and beaches varies greatly by address; from PVR, arrange an authorized taxi or transfer.
- After dark: Generally mellow, with evenings centered on your accommodation or village restaurants; a Zona Romántica night out means arranging the return journey.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $300 a night
Where to stay in Puerto Vallarta: every neighborhood ranked
Where to look in South Shore (Conchas Chinas to Mismaloya)
- Paseo de los Corales. The upper Conchas Chinas slopes suit view-seeking travelers comfortable arranging rides rather than walking back uphill after dinner. Hotels here: Grand Miramar All Luxury Suites & Residences.
- Barra de Navidad, Conchas Chinas. Look on the coastal side of the highway for rocky coves and slower beach days, rather than continuous town life. Hotels here: Lindo Mar Resort.
- Avenida 5 de Mayo, Mismaloya. The village approach suits independent beachgoers wanting local life and simple seafood outings instead of an enclosed resort routine. Hotels here: Hotel Casa Iguana Mismaloya.
How to choose
- Choose Lindo Mar Resort if you want a quieter oceanfront apartment with a full kitchen and separate living space.
- Choose Grand Miramar All Luxury Suites & Residences if you prioritize large suites, bay views and pools over walk-out beach access.
- Choose Hotel Casa Iguana Mismaloya if you want budget suite space and village life, and are happy walking to the beach.
What paying more buys
Hotel Casa Iguana Mismaloya is much cheaper than most here, with roomy kitchenettes but tired interiors and a beach walk. Lindo Mar adds oceanfront apartment living; pricier Garza Blanca adds expansive suites, multiple pools, dining and a kids' club. The resort premium is less useful if village restaurants and independent outings will fill most of your stay. Typical rates with Axel here run from $76 a night at Hotel Casa Iguana Mismaloya to $632 at Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa - All Inclusive (last 30 days).
