Axel's take on Coco Beach & Punta Esmeralda: #4 of 7 in Playa del Carmen, 6.5/10
Choose a residential beach rhythm, with convenience varying sharply by street. Coco Beach combines residential character, solid hotels and good value, but fewer doorstep options and longer journeys south reduce convenience.
Coco Beach, around Avenida CTM and the seafront streets north of Calle 38, trades Centro’s club strip for condos, cafés and a more residential routine. Couples and longer-stay visitors can settle into self-catering while keeping northern Quinta within reach. Playa 88 and Punta Esmeralda lie farther north, rather than outside every Coco Beach address.
The trade-off is a longer return from the ferry and late-night bars; northern addresses work better with taxis or bikes. Punta Esmeralda’s access rehabilitation is scheduled for September–November 2026, potentially into December, so confirm entry arrangements before building your stay around that beach.
- Best for: couples, travelers on a budget
- Skip it if: You want the ferry and clubs on your doorstep; Your plans depend on uncomplicated Punta Esmeralda access
- Getting around: Walk or bike around Coco Beach; use taxis for farther-north addresses; CUN/TQO arrivals can use a road transfer or ADO downtown followed by taxi.
- After dark: Think dinner and a residential return rather than a club strip; Centro’s late-night action is farther south.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $134 a night

- Avenida CTM beach approach. A residential-feeling beach gateway with fewer evening crowds; suits longer stays that do not revolve around the ferry or clubs. Hotels here: Hotel Grand Fifty Suites, Hotel52.
- Avenida 10, Calles 50–58. Northern blocks trade the central bustle for a more residential routine; suits walkers happy to travel farther for nightlife. Hotels here: Hotel Grand Fifty Suites, Terrasse Hotel Playa del Carmen, Hotel52.
- Quinta Avenida at Calle 112. Farther north than the busy promenade; choose this end for a self-contained resort stay rather than frequent downtown walks. Hotels here: Paradisus La Perla - Adults Only - Riviera Maya - All Inclusive, Paradisus Playa del Carmen – Riviera Maya - All Inclusive.
How to choose
- Choose Paradisus La Perla - Adults Only - Riviera Maya - All Inclusive if you want adults-only all-inclusive comfort, warm poolside service and spacious suites.
- Choose Paradisus Playa del Carmen – Riviera Maya - All Inclusive if you are traveling with young children and will use the pools, Aquazone and children's club.
- Choose Hotel Grand Fifty Suites if you want roomy suites and a rooftop pool without committing to an expensive all-inclusive.
What paying more buys
Hotel52 and Terrasse keep costs down with basic rooms and rooftop pools. Grand Fifty Suites costs more for generous suite space and kitchenettes; the much pricier Paradisus resorts add all-inclusive dining, extensive pools and stronger resort service. That jump is hard to justify for independent travelers who mainly want a bed between beach walks and meals out. Typical rates with Axel here run from $45 a night at Hotel52 to $648 at Paradisus La Perla - Adults Only - Riviera Maya - All Inclusive (last 30 days).
