Axel's take on Old Market & Downtown: #1 of 7 in Omaha, 7.5/10
The easiest Omaha base for a first visit without constant driving. Old Market leads through character, sightseeing access and strong hotels, though its higher rates weaken value and bar-front rooms can mean noisy nights.
Stay here for the simplest Omaha weekend: brick warehouses, cobbled streets, independent shops and dinner choices around 10th–13th streets. The RiverFront provides space to wander between meals, while the Durham Museum adds a substantial indoor stop. Recent local advice consistently steers car-free first-timers toward the Old Market.
The trade-off is bustle rather than seclusion. Choose away from bar frontages if sleep matters, and expect changing crossings around Farnam and Harney during October 2026 streetcar construction. The streetcar is not operating yet, and the zoo still needs a separate journey: downtown does not make every Omaha attraction walkable.
- Best for: first-time visitors, travelers without a car, museums and culture, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You want secluded evenings; Your plans are mainly in western Omaha
- Getting around: Walk the Old Market and riverfront; use ORBT along Dodge/Douglas; reach OMA by taxi/rideshare or weekday-peak Route 106 at 14th & Dodge, checking current detours.
- After dark: Restaurants and bars sustain evening activity in the Old Market; choose away from nightlife frontages if noise matters.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $151 a night · usually 8% under the public rate
