Axel's take on Norfolk Airport & Military Highway: #5 of 6 in Norfolk, 3.5/10
A practical overnight stop, not the Norfolk you came to explore. A comparatively solid hotel selection supports practical overnight stays, but weak sightseeing access, little within walking distance and limited character keep it fifth.
The North Military Highway corridor is about getting things done: airport access, retail errands and road connections rather than a neighborhood to wander. HRT routes serve the corridor and shopping destinations, but they do not turn its spread-out commercial layout into a walkable city break. Stay here when flight timing or scattered appointments matter most.
For leisure, the compromise is substantial: evenings and sightseeing usually mean another drive. Recent local advice distinguishes the airport’s regional convenience from Ghent’s walkability and restaurant character. Military Circle Mall is closed, with demolition anticipated in fall 2026, so older descriptions of it as an active shopping attraction are obsolete. Skip this strip if exploring Norfolk is the main purpose.
- Best for: travelers on a budget, shopping
- Skip it if: You want to explore from your doorstep; You are traveling without a car
- Getting around: Routes 15 and 23 serve parts of the commercial corridor; the walk to a stop depends on your address. The Tide is not a doorstep service here. Use a car, taxi, rideshare or confirmed courtesy vehicle from ORF; PHF is a longer road transfer.
- After dark: Plan an evening destination rather than a stroll: the area works as separate commercial stops connected by roads.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $156 a night
