Axel's take on Historic Nature Trail: #3 of 6 in Gatlinburg, 6.8/10
A quieter downtown compromise, but check the uphill walk. Historic Nature Trail has the strongest hotel scores and excellent access, offset by weaker value, fewer nearby stops and uphill returns.
Historic Nature Trail, also called Airport Road, leads away from the Parkway past the convention center toward Mynatt Park and Cherokee Orchard Road. It is a useful middle ground: downtown entertainment below, picnic areas and recreational space farther uphill, and a straightforward driving approach toward Roaring Fork's scenic route.
Stay here for conventions, family downtime or evenings removed from the main strip. The catch is elevation, not simply distance: visitors specifically flag the incline when discussing walks back from town. Lower addresses work better for frequent dinner walks; farther uphill, the Red trolley becomes more important. Skip it if hills are difficult.
- Best for: families, business trips and conventions, a quiet stay, luxury travelers
- Skip it if: Uphill walks are difficult; You want nightlife immediately outside
- Getting around: The Red trolley serves Airport Road and Cherokee Orchard Road; walk downhill to the Parkway; from TYS, use a rental car or prebooked taxi.
- After dark: Expect a quieter lodging-focused evening than on the Parkway; visitors value the separation, but the return walk can be uphill.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $201 a night
