Axel's take on Crystal Beach & Henderson Beach: #1 of 5 in Destin, 6.8/10
The best all-round beach base, especially with a car. Beach-neighborhood character, good hotels and useful access put it first, despite limited doorstep variety and the need for a car beyond local outings.
Crystal Beach is our strongest choice for a first beach-focused visit with a car. Scenic Highway 98 has a neighborhood rhythm: cottages, bikes, coffee stops and street-end walks to the sand, with Henderson Beach State Park alongside. This feels more residential than the harbor and less self-contained than Sandestin.
Choose your exact beach access before booking; a Gulf view does not guarantee convenient entry. The harbor is a traffic-dependent drive, not an evening stroll. Henderson introduced vehicle-entry reservations on May 15, 2026; check that requirement and current beach amenities during October's post-Isaias cleanup.
- Best for: first-time visitors, couples, luxury travelers, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You want to walk to late-night bars; You will not verify the property's beach access
- Getting around: Walk or bike Scenic Highway 98 to your confirmed beach access; a car helps beyond the neighborhood, with fixed-route buses suspended; from VPS, rent a car or arrange a transfer.
- After dark: Usually low-key after dinner along the cottage streets; choose the harbor instead if bar-hopping is central to your trip.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $120 a night

How to choose
- Choose The Henderson Beach Resort & Spa if attentive service, a spa and separate family and adults-only pools matter more than keeping extras down.
- Choose Comfort Inn & Suites Destin near Henderson Beach if you have a car and want cheaper-than-most accommodation with breakfast and parking included.
- Choose Holiday Inn Express Destin E - Commons Mall area by IHG if you want a short beach walk and comfortable rooms without paying for a full resort.
What paying more buys
Comfort Inn & Suites keeps costs down with breakfast and parking included, but beach days require a drive. The Henderson Beach Resort & Spa is one of the pricier picks, buying attentive service, private beach access, a spa and more elaborate pools. That premium is hard to justify if you'll spend most days exploring. Typical rates with Axel here run from $98 a night at Spark by Hilton Destin to $404 at The Henderson Beach Resort & Spa (last 30 days).
