Axel's take on Christianshavn: #3 of 7 in Copenhagen, 7.6/10
The canal-side choice for couples who still want easy city access. Canal character and easy connections lift Christianshavn above the waterfront alternatives, despite fewer hotels, less doorstep choice and the weakest value.
Christianshavn gives you colourful houses, moored boats and canal-side walks without cutting you off from central Copenhagen. Explore around Overgaden and Sankt Annæ Gade, climb the Church of Our Saviour, or cross the harbour toward Nyhavn. Restaurants and waterside cafés make this an especially appealing base for couples who prefer a neighbourhood feel to a sightseeing thoroughfare.
It is less useful for shopping and all-night entertainment than the old town or Vesterbro. Christiania is nearby, but its changing circumstances should not define all of Christianshavn: after Pusher Street's 2024 closure, SVT reported renewed organised drug selling there in January 2026. Choose Christianshavn for its canals and atmosphere, not an outdated picture of Christiania.
- Best for: couples, food lovers, museums and culture
- Skip it if: Shopping is your main priority; You want clubs on your doorstep
- Getting around: Christianshavn has M1/M2; walk over Knippelsbro toward Slotsholmen or the Inner Harbour Bridge toward Nyhavn; CPH is direct on M2.
- After dark: The canals are generally lower-key than Vesterbro's bar streets; restaurant evenings suit it better than an unplanned club crawl.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $262 a night · usually 16% under the public rate

What paying more buys
NH Collection Copenhagen costs only a little more than 25hours Hotel Paper Island, offering generally quieter rooms, attentive service and easier metro access. Paper Island makes more sense if design and its bars are the draw; paying extra is less compelling when you will explore mainly on foot or by bike. Typical rates with Axel here run from $255 a night at 25hours Hotel Paper Island to $269 at NH Collection Copenhagen (last 30 days).
