Downtown Tampa & Channelside
waterfront walks · modern restaurants · arena nights · city skyline
6.9/10
The strongest all-round Tampa base, especially without a car.
Strong character, good hotels and useful sightseeing access put downtown first, despite weak value and a less consistent doorstep offering than St. Petersburg.

Downtown works because the Riverwalk joins together places you will actually use: waterfront parks, museums, the convention center and the Channelside end of town. Water Street and Sparkman Wharf provide an easy dinner-and-drinks focus, while the Florida Aquarium and Benchmark International Arena make this especially convenient for family outings and events.
Choose your street carefully: Water Street and Channelside suit an evening-oriented stay; the office core is less of a nightlife destination. The streetcar handles Ybor, not the whole region. Busch Gardens and the Gulf beaches still require separate transport, so skip downtown if most days will revolve around sand rather than the city.
- Best for
- first-time visitorsbusiness trips and conventionstravelers without a carsports fans
- Skip it if
- You want to walk straight onto a Gulf beach; Most days will be spent at Busch Gardens
- Getting around
- Walk the Riverwalk and use the free TECO streetcar for Channelside–Ybor; HART 10/30 connect downtown with TPA’s Rental Car Center, reached by SkyConnect. PIE is simplest by car or rideshare.
- After dark
- Water Street and Sparkman Wharf attract evening diners; arena events add crowds, while office-oriented blocks offer less reason to linger.
