The Rocks & Circular Quay
sandstone lanes · harbour promenades · historic pubs · weekend markets
8.1/10
The easiest first visit, with the harbour on your doorstep.
Harbour character, strong hotels and plentiful sights nearby put it first, but value is weak and the atmosphere is visitor-heavy.

Stay here for the Sydney you came to see: sandstone lanes, harbour walks and the Opera House across the water. George Street and Argyle Street connect historic pubs, weekend markets and the Museum of Contemporary Art, while Circular Quay makes ferry outings feel like part of the holiday rather than a transport chore.
The trade-off is a visitor-heavy atmosphere rather than everyday neighbourhood life. The Rocks also has steps and sloping streets, so check the walking route if mobility matters. Choose it for a short first visit, harbour-focused sightseeing or a special occasion; choose Surry Hills instead if restaurants and local routines matter more.
