Axel's take: 8.8/10

Historic character, generous rooms and a central location make this a strong Sydney base. A heritage 4.5-star city hotel in Sydney’s CBD, scored for what it is.

The Grace is a heritage 4.5-star city hotel that delivers where it counts: comfortable rooms, dependable cleanliness and an easy CBD location. Its Art Deco public spaces give it more personality than a standard business hotel, while recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise spacious rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. We'd choose it for sightseeing or work trips, especially if walkable shopping, restaurants and transport matter more than harbour views. Complimentary non-alcoholic minibar drinks are a thoughtful extra.

The trade-offs are mostly around the edges. Several guests find the rooftop indoor pool much smaller than expected, and breakfast earns mixed reports rather than universal praise. Most describe quiet rooms, though some report street or neighbouring-room noise. Parking costs extra and has restricted access hours. We'd skip it for a pool-focused holiday or a full-scale luxury experience.

• Best for: Couples exploring Sydney; CBD business travelers; Families wanting spacious hotel rooms

• Watch out for: Small indoor pool; Some street and adjoining-room noise; Paid parking with restricted access hours

• Location: Central CBD base near Wynyard, shopping and restaurants; not a waterfront hotel.

• Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable, with modern interiors behind the historic facade; sound insulation gets occasional criticism.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest reviews and major booking-site ratings.

• Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise friendly reception staff and helpful concierge service.

• Amenities: Rooftop gym, small indoor pool, sauna, steam room and sun deck; breakfast feedback varies.

• Fees and surprises: Third-party Plaza Parking charges separately, has limited operating hours and a 1.9-metre height limit; Expedia lists a card surcharge.
