Carmel makes the strongest case when the stay itself is part of the holiday. Ocean Avenue and the surrounding lanes bring galleries, boutiques, tasting rooms and courtyard restaurants together above Carmel Beach. Its dining scene has also developed beyond the old-fashioned special-occasion stereotype, with younger restaurateurs adding fresh reasons to spend evenings in the village.
