Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong budget base for drivers, with clean rooms and a useful indoor pool. a no-frills 2-star motor-court motel on Monterey’s North Fremont strip, scored for what it is.

El Castell is a no-frills 2-star motor-court motel, now marketed as El Castell Hotel, and we'd shortlist it for a practical Monterey stay. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff; Booking.com’s overall ratings support that positive picture. In-room microwaves, refrigerators and coffee makers make the simple rooms useful, while free parking and a heated indoor pool add genuine value for families.

The compromise is the setting: this is a roadside base, not a waterfront retreat or a walk-to-Cannery-Row address. Guests mention aircraft, road and occasional upstairs-neighbor noise, although plenty also report quiet stays. We'd choose it for road trips and budget-minded sightseeing, but skip it if peaceful surroundings or strolling straight into Monterey’s main attractions matter most.

  • Best for: budget-minded travelers with a car; families wanting a pool; short Monterey road-trip stops

  • Watch out for: aircraft, road and occasional neighbor noise; main tourist sights require transport; no elevator to upper-floor rooms

  • Location: North Fremont roadside setting near Highway 1; better for driving to attractions than walking.

  • Rooms: Simple, updated-looking rooms with microwaves, refrigerators and Keurig coffee makers; guests regularly praise bed comfort.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews, supported by Booking.com’s cleanliness rating.

  • Service: Recent guests repeatedly describe welcoming, helpful staff and straightforward check-in.

  • Amenities: Heated indoor pool, free Wi-Fi, free parking and guest laundry; upper floors are stairs-only.

  • Fees and surprises: Expedia lists online preregistration and ID submission before arrival; early check-in and late checkout can cost extra.
