Axel's take on Carmel-by-the-Sea: #4 of 6 in Monterey, California, 6.2/10
Stay in Carmel for village wandering, memorable meals and beach sunsets. Carmel pairs strong hotels with village character and dining, but weaker value and less convenient access to Monterey sights keep it fourth.
Carmel makes the strongest case when the stay itself is part of the holiday. Ocean Avenue and the surrounding lanes bring galleries, boutiques, tasting rooms and courtyard restaurants together above Carmel Beach. Its dining scene has also developed beyond the old-fashioned special-occasion stereotype, with younger restaurateurs adding fresh reasons to spend evenings in the village.
It is compact, but not flat: the walk back from the beach climbs, and uneven surfaces deserve attention. Monterey's aquarium and harbor are separate outings rather than casual strolls. Choose Carmel for couples, food-led weekends and browsing between meals. Skip it if your itinerary revolves around daily Monterey attractions or if easy, level walking is essential.
- Best for: couples, food lovers, museums and culture, shopping
- Skip it if: Most days revolve around Monterey's waterfront; You need flat, consistently even walking
- Getting around: Walk the village; MST 5 stops at Mission/6th for Monterey, with a downhill walk to the beach. MRY: taxi. SJC: Groome to Monterey, then 5 or taxi.
- After dark: Restaurants and tasting rooms set the pace, not clubs; carry a light because streets lack conventional street lighting.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $326 a night · usually 6% under the public rate

- Mission Street, Third to Fifth. Look north of Ocean Avenue to stay near the village grid without centering your stay on its main shopping street. Hotels here: Tradewinds Carmel, Hofsas House Hotel, Best Western Carmel's Town House Lodge, Carmel Wayfarer Inn.

How to choose
- Choose Tradewinds Carmel if you want a peaceful garden inn, accommodating staff and breakfast delivered to your door.
- Choose La Playa Hotel if you will use the heated pool and value beach walks, standout breakfast and historic surroundings.
- Choose Carmel Bay View Inn if you want one of the cheapest picks with breakfast and parking included, rather than luxury.
What paying more buys
Carmel Bay View Inn is cheaper than most here and includes breakfast, parking and a seasonal pool. The much pricier La Playa Hotel adds historic gardens, air-conditioning, a heated pool and standout breakfast, but not guaranteed room space. Its premium is less worthwhile if village exploring matters more than time at the hotel. Typical rates with Axel here run from $209 a night at Carmel Bay View Inn to $1,080 at La Playa Hotel (last 30 days).
