Stay around SkyCity for the Sky Tower, destination restaurants and the New Zealand International Convention Centre, which opened in February 2026. Queen Street leads toward the waterfront, while Auckland Art Gallery sits uphill to the east. Te Waihorotiu Station, opened on 13 September 2026, makes this a substantially better-connected base than older guides suggest.
- Best for
- first-time visitorsbusiness trips and conventionsmuseums and culturetravelers on a budget
- Skip it if
- You want waterfront atmosphere; Steep walks are a problem

- After dark

- Where to look
- Federal Street. Start here for restaurant-led evenings and easy Sky Tower sightseeing; it suits short city breaks more than waterfront lounging.Aotea Square and Mayoral Drive. Stay near the arts venues for concerts and theatre nights, with Queen Street close for daytime exploring.
