Axel's take: 9.1/10

A standout waterfront base, with excellent staff and a nightlife noise caveat. a contemporary upscale waterfront hotel, scored for what it is.

M Social is a contemporary upscale waterfront hotel that gets the important things unusually right. It's a strong pick for exploring Auckland without a car: ferries are across Quay Street, with Viaduct restaurants and downtown shopping nearby. Expedia, Booking.com and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise the helpful staff, clean rooms and harbour outlooks. Standard rooms are compact rather than lavish, but big windows and modern furnishings make them appealing. We'd choose it for a city break or a stay before a cruise.

The main reservation is nighttime noise: recent Expedia and Trip.com guests report harbour nightlife and traffic reaching some rooms, although others describe quiet stays. Breakfast and valet parking can cost extra, so check your inclusions. We'd skip it if absolute silence or sprawling rooms matter more than waterfront convenience.

• Best for: car-free city breaks; ferry trips and waterfront dining; stays before or after a cruise

• Watch out for: nightlife and traffic noise in some rooms; compact standard rooms; breakfast and valet parking may cost extra

• Location: Across from the ferry terminal, near Viaduct dining and downtown shopping.

• Rooms: Modern, window-lined standard rooms measure about 23 square metres; larger rooms and suites are available.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong across guest-review sites, with frequent praise for spotless rooms.

• Service: Friendly, attentive staff are a repeated highlight across several platforms.

• Amenities: Beast & Butterflies restaurant and bar, a 24-hour gym, free Wi-Fi and EV-capable valet parking.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast and parking inclusions; the Loaded room package includes both.
