Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong central luxury pick, especially for dining, service and a proper lap pool. A five-star city hotel in Auckland’s SkyCity entertainment precinct, scored for what it is.

The Grand is a five-star city hotel in Auckland’s SkyCity entertainment precinct, and we'd pick it for comfort and convenience rather than boutique character. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds; Booking.com’s strong ratings reinforce that picture. Federal Street restaurants and the Sky Tower are on the doorstep, while the heated indoor lap pool, sauna and East Day Spa give it appeal beyond a convenient overnight stop.

The trade-offs are mostly practical: entry-level rooms are 28 square metres, so don't expect sprawling luxury, and parking and breakfast cost extra unless included. A few recent guests mention corridor or neighbouring-room noise, though many describe quiet stays. It’s a strong choice for city breaks and business trips; we'd skip it if you want waterfront surroundings or an intimate, small-hotel atmosphere.

• Best for: Couples on city breaks; Business travelers; Restaurant and SkyCity visitors

• Watch out for: Compact entry-level rooms; Parking and breakfast extras; Occasional corridor noise

• Location: Central Federal Street setting beside Sky Tower and restaurants; the waterfront is a downhill walk.

• Rooms: Comfortable, contemporary rooms; entry categories measure 28 square metres, with harbour views in selected rooms.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across major booking sites and recent guest feedback.

• Service: Recent reviews strongly favor the friendly, helpful reception and concierge teams.

• Amenities: Heated 25-metre indoor lap pool, spa pool, sauna, 24-hour gym and separately booked East Day Spa treatments.

• Fees and surprises: Paid parking, breakfast unless included, a credit-card surcharge and an incidental hold or bond; official self-parking terms charge per exit.
