#7 of 9 hotels in Downtown & the Capitol by Axel's take. Downtown & the Capitol is #2 of 5 places to stay in Tallahassee. The best hotels in Downtown & the Capitol, ranked · Where to stay in Tallahassee

Axel's take: 7.2/10

Go for the downtown location and rooftop lounge, not consistently polished rooms. a historic 4-star boutique hotel in downtown Tallahassee, scored for what it is.

Hotel Duval is a historic 4-star boutique hotel whose downtown location, rooftop lounge and personable staff are stronger selling points than its rooms. We'd consider it for a short business trip or an evening out: Shula's 347 Grill and Level 8 Lounge make staying in appealing, while the Capitol and downtown restaurants are walkable. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the welcoming service, particularly the valet team.

The catch is uneven room quality for an upscale brand. Alongside plenty of clean, comfortable stays, reviews repeatedly describe tired finishes, noisy air-conditioning and traffic noise; some also report musty smells or maintenance problems. Glass bathroom partitions offer limited privacy. Paid valet parking adds another consideration. We'd skip it if you're a light sleeper, sharing with someone who wants bathroom privacy, or expecting reliably fresh four-star accommodation.

  • Best for: short downtown business trips; couples prioritizing dining and cocktails; travelers who value personable service

  • Watch out for: traffic noise and loud air-conditioning; glass-partition bathrooms with limited privacy; dated rooms and uneven maintenance

  • Location: Walkable to downtown restaurants and the Capitol; convenient for FSU visits, but not beside the stadium.

  • Rooms: Comfort gets praise, but dated finishes, dark lighting and bathroom privacy draw recurring criticism.

  • Cleanliness: Many recent guests report clean rooms; others describe musty odors and housekeeping lapses.

  • Service: Friendly staff and attentive valet service are the most consistent strengths across recent reviews.

  • Amenities: Shula's 347 Grill, Level 8 rooftop lounge, a lobby bistro and a fitness center.

  • Fees and surprises: Marriott lists paid valet parking; breakfast generally costs extra unless included in your booking or benefits.
