#6 of 9 hotels in Östermalm by Axel's take. Östermalm is #4 of 8 places to stay in Stockholm. The best hotels in Östermalm, ranked · Where to stay in Stockholm

Axel's take: 8.3/10

Waterfront character and warm service, with a few five-star compromises. a historic five-star waterfront hotel on Stockholm’s Strandvägen, scored for what it is.

Hotel Diplomat is a historic five-star on Strandvägen, strongest on waterfront atmosphere and access to central Stockholm. We'd pick it for a characterful city break rather than flawless modern luxury. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, breakfast and comfortable, clean rooms. The hotel announced redesigned guest rooms in March 2026, refreshing its traditional interiors without stripping away their character.

The trade-offs matter at this level: some rooms are small, street noise recurs in reviews, and summer cooling draws complaints. Management has clarified that the hotel uses ventilation rather than conventional air conditioning. The sauna and hammam are a privately booked retreat, not unrestricted spa access. It's a strong choice for couples and sightseeing; we'd skip it if generous space, reliable cooling or near-silence are non-negotiable.

  • Best for: couples who appreciate historic hotels; sightseers wanting a waterfront base; travelers prioritizing personal service

  • Watch out for: street noise, particularly on weekends; small rooms in some categories; ventilation rather than conventional air conditioning

  • Location: Excellent Strandvägen setting overlooking Nybroviken, convenient for shopping, boats and central sights.

  • Rooms: Traditional interiors with a 2026 room refresh; sizes vary, and noise and cooling deserve attention.

  • Cleanliness: Strong overall cleanliness ratings on Booking.com and Expedia outweigh isolated complaints.

  • Service: Warm, helpful staff are a recurring strength, though occasional service lapses fall short of five-star expectations.

  • Amenities: Restaurant, bars, complimentary gym access and a privately bookable sauna-and-hammam retreat.

  • Fees and surprises: Breakfast and valet parking can cost extra; retreat access is chargeable unless qualifying direct-booking benefits apply.
