#8 of 9 hotels in Gamla Stan by Axel's take. Gamla Stan is #3 of 8 places to stay in Stockholm. The best hotels in Gamla Stan, ranked · Where to stay in Stockholm

Axel's take: 7.0/10

An excellent Old Town base, but room choice and arrival logistics matter. a simple, self-service 3-star aparthotel in Stockholm’s Old Town, scored for what it is.

At Old Town is a simple, self-service aparthotel whose biggest selling point is its Gamla Stan location, near Stortorget and the Royal Palace. We'd consider it for a sightseeing trip rather than a stay with hotel-style service. Recent Expedia guests often praise the cleanliness, and larger apartments can work well for families. Choose carefully, though: this is a mix of apartments and ordinary rooms, not an all-kitchen property.

The recurring snag is arrival: Expedia and Tripadvisor guests describe confusing virtual check-in, unclear entrances and uneven access to help. There is no staffed reception or elevator, and some budget rooms are tiny and windowless. Confirm your entrance, floor, windows and kitchen before booking. We'd skip it with heavy luggage, mobility limitations or expectations of dependable face-to-face service.

  • Best for: independent Old Town sightseers; travelers packing light; families booking a larger apartment

  • Watch out for: confusing virtual check-in and inconsistent support; stairs without an elevator; tiny windowless rooms; kitchens only in selected units

  • Location: Excellent for exploring Gamla Stan on foot, with the palace and metro nearby.

  • Rooms: Layouts vary substantially: larger apartments coexist with very small rooms and windowless budget options.

  • Cleanliness: Generally a strength in the larger review samples, although some guests report bathroom odors.

  • Service: Remote assistance rather than staffed reception; helpful responses and frustrating communication both recur.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi and private bathrooms; selected units have kitchens, but breakfast and onsite parking are unavailable.

  • Fees and surprises: Confirm the exact entrance and room facilities before arrival; the aparthotel name does not guarantee a kitchen.
