Axel's take: 8.3/10

A practical downtown base, provided quiet nights aren’t your priority. A 4-star self-catering aparthotel in central Reykjavík, scored for what it is.

Thingholt is a 4-star aparthotel rather than a full-service hotel, and we'd pick it for an independent Reykjavík stay. Kitchens and washing machines make longer visits easier, while shops, restaurants and sightseeing are close at hand. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, comfortable beds and helpful staff. It delivers well on the practical basics.

The main compromise is sleep: recurring reports describe nightlife noise, footsteps overhead and thin walls, although some apartments are quieter. Smaller layouts can feel cramped with the sofa bed open, and stairs deserve checking before arrival. Breakfast and paid spa access are at the separate hotel across the street; routine housekeeping isn't included. We'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone expecting daily four-star hotel service.

• Best for: Couples who want to self-cater; Longer city stays; Car-free downtown exploring

• Watch out for: Nightlife and neighboring-apartment noise.; Compact layouts and stairs on some routes.; Housekeeping costs extra.

• Location: Just off Laugavegur, with restaurants, groceries and tour pickup stops nearby.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and useful kitchens; smaller apartments have limited storage and space around sofa beds.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall: Expedia scores cleanliness 9.6, with repeated recent praise from guests.

• Service: Helpful reception staff at the separate hotel; this is otherwise a self-service stay.

• Amenities: Kitchenettes, washing machines and Wi-Fi; breakfast, bar and paid spa access are across the street.

• Fees and surprises: Cleaning is extra; check breakfast inclusion. The official guide lists only four first-come parking spaces—don't count on one.
