Axel's take: 8.2/10

A characterful downtown base, provided nightlife matters more than guaranteed quiet. a small 3-star boutique hotel in downtown Reykjavík, scored for what it is.

City Center Hotel is a small 3-star boutique hotel whose strongest asset is its downtown address. It's a strong pick for exploring Reykjavík on foot, with restaurants, shops and the harbor nearby. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms and distinctive decor. The overall feedback is very positive for a hotel of this class, though its central location comes with a substantial sleep trade-off.

Nearby bars generate recurring late-night noise, especially on weekends; the hotel supplies earplugs and describes upper-floor superior rooms as quieter. Service has historically earned excellent feedback, but Expedia now lists code-based self-check-in without a front desk, echoed by recent guest reports. A June 2026 guest also reported the bar closed for renovation; reopening is unconfirmed. We'd skip it for guaranteed quiet or reliably staffed reception.

  • Best for: car-free city breaks; travelers who enjoy downtown nightlife; couples seeking boutique character

  • Watch out for: late-night noise from nearby bars; code-based self-check-in without a front desk; bar reopening unconfirmed after renovation

  • Location: Central Austurstræti address, walkable to restaurants, shopping, Harpa and the harbor.

  • Rooms: Comfortable, individually decorated rooms; upper-floor superior rooms are the hotel's quieter option.

  • Cleanliness: Strong cleanliness ratings across Booking.com and Expedia, supported by repeated guest praise.

  • Service: Historically highly praised staff, but current Expedia instructions specify self-check-in and no front desk.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, elevator and in-room coffee makers; do not count on an operating hotel bar.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking is off-site and may cost extra; breakfast is not included according to recent guest feedback.
