Axel's take: 8.2/10

A strong sightseeing base with rooftop views, but rooms lack four-star polish. a practical waterfront 4-star in central Reykjavik, scored for what it is.

Arnarhvoll is a practical waterfront 4-star opposite Harpa, and we'd pick it for exploring Reykjavik rather than a luxury stay. Downtown restaurants and tour pickups are close, while the eighth-floor SKÝ Bar delivers the standout bay views. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and the varied breakfast. It's a strong base if you'll spend most days out exploring.

The compromise is the accommodation: rooms can feel compact, storage is limited, and several guests describe awkward showers that leave the bathroom floor wet. Rooms lack air-conditioning, and opening windows can admit traffic noise. We'd skip it if spacious, polished rooms or reliably quiet nights are priorities; otherwise, the location and service make a persuasive case.

• Best for: first-time Reykjavik visitors; travelers using guided tours; couples prioritizing location over room size

• Watch out for: compact rooms and awkward wet-room showers; no air-conditioning; traffic noise with windows open

• Location: Opposite Harpa, with downtown sights, restaurants and tour pickup stops within easy walking distance.

• Rooms: Comfortable but often compact; guests repeatedly mention limited storage and bathrooms that get wet after showering.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Expedia and Tripadvisor feedback.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff are among the hotel's most consistently praised features.

• Amenities: Rooftop bar, breakfast buffet and an adults-only wellness area with hot tub and sauna; don't expect a full-service dinner restaurant.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion varies by booking; check your package, and plan parking separately rather than assuming an onsite space.
