#8 of 8 hotels in Hlemmur & Borgartún by Axel's take. Hlemmur & Borgartún is #4 of 5 places to stay in Reykjavik. The best hotels in Hlemmur & Borgartún, ranked · Where to stay in Reykjavik

Axel's take: 7.1/10

A practical budget base for sightseeing, but comfort depends on your room. a no-frills 2-star guesthouse on central Reykjavik’s main shopping street, scored for what it is.

101 Guesthouse is a no-frills 2-star guesthouse on Laugavegur, best treated as a practical place to sleep rather than somewhere to linger. Its strongest asset is location: shops and restaurants are close, and tour pickups at bus stop 9 are across the street. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests often praise helpful staff and clean, basic accommodation. A shared kitchen makes self-catering possible, too.

The compromises are dated interiors, sparse furnishings and variable bathroom standards. Many rooms share toilets and showers, while some economy rooms have no windows; private-bathroom options are available. Noise crops up on Tripadvisor and Trip.com, and reception has limited hours despite the official website’s round-the-clock claim. We’d choose it for a short, budget-minded city stay, but skip it if quiet nights or polished surroundings matter most.

  • Best for: budget-minded city explorers; travelers joining bus excursions; short stays with self-catering

  • Watch out for: shared bathrooms and windowless economy options; noise in some rooms; limited reception hours

  • Location: Central Laugavegur setting, with restaurants, shopping and bus stop 9 close by.

  • Rooms: Basic and dated; check carefully for a window and whether the bathroom is private.

  • Cleanliness: Recent guests frequently report clean rooms, though shared-area standards receive mixed feedback.

  • Service: Helpful staff earn repeated praise; arrange late arrival and obtain access instructions beforehand.

  • Amenities: Shared kitchen, free Wi-Fi, luggage storage and a lift; facilities are functional rather than extensive.

  • Fees and surprises: Nearby parking and airport transfers cost extra; confirm breakfast availability rather than assuming it is included.
