Axel's take: 7.9/10

A practical central base, provided you’re happy trading hotel service for independence. a simple 3-star self-service apartment hotel on Laugavegur, scored for what it is.

Hotel Vera is a simple 3-star apartment hotel, not a conventional staffed hotel. It’s a good pick for independent travelers who want Reykjavík on their doorstep and a kitchenette for easy meals. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the central location, and recent reviews are mostly positive about room comfort and cleanliness. Laundry facilities make it useful for a longer Iceland trip.

The catch is the hands-off setup: there’s no reception, access is by emailed code, and guests repeatedly report keypad or communication problems. Entry through a restaurant also feels unconventional. Tripadvisor’s smaller review sample is considerably harsher, including recent complaints about shower cleanliness and cramped sofa-bed arrangements. We’d favor it for two self-sufficient adults rather than four sharing a studio, and skip it if reliable on-site assistance matters.

• Best for: independent couples; travelers who want to self-cater; exploring Reykjavík on foot

• Watch out for: no reception and recurring access-code problems; studios can feel cramped with sofa beds open; some recent shower-cleanliness complaints

• Location: Central Laugavegur setting, convenient for shops, restaurants and walking to major sights.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable studios with kitchenettes; check the layout carefully before booking for three or four.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback, but recent shower-mold complaints appear on both Expedia and Tripadvisor.

• Service: Remote support rather than a front desk; communication and keypad reliability are recurring weak spots.

• Amenities: Kitchenettes, free Wi-Fi, shared laundry facilities and an elevator; a self-service rather than full-service stay.

• Fees and surprises: No on-site parking; guests report extra charges for room servicing, so confirm housekeeping arrangements.
