#9 of 9 hotels in Old Town & Harpa by Axel's take. Old Town & Harpa is #1 of 5 places to stay in Reykjavik. The best hotels in Old Town & Harpa, ranked · Where to stay in Reykjavik

Axel's take: 8.0/10

A dependable downtown base, provided you can trade quiet nights for convenience. a straightforward 3-star hotel on Reykjavík’s lively old-town square, scored for what it is.

Center Hotels Plaza is a straightforward 3-star whose strongest feature is its position on Ingólfstorg square. It’s a strong pick for exploring Reykjavík on foot, with restaurants, the harbour and tour pickup stops close by. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. The breakfast buffet also earns plenty of approval, making this a practical sightseeing base rather than a hotel to build your trip around.

The catch is sleep: recurring reports describe late-night music, shouting and traffic around the square, especially on weekends. Rooms can also become warm without air conditioning, making opening the window an awkward solution. Room condition and bathroom space vary, so request a quieter room away from the square rather than choosing solely for the view. We’d skip it if undisturbed sleep is your top priority.

  • Best for: first-time Reykjavík visitors; car-free sightseeing trips; travelers who enjoy downtown nightlife

  • Watch out for: late-night noise around the square; warm rooms without air conditioning; variable room and bathroom sizes

  • Location: Excellent old-town position for restaurants, the harbour and nearby tour pickup stops.

  • Rooms: Comfortable beds, but room condition and bathroom space vary; summer warmth is a recurring complaint.

  • Cleanliness: Consistently praised across recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews.

  • Service: Helpful, friendly staff are a repeated strength in guest feedback.

  • Amenities: Breakfast buffet, lobby bar, free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour front desk cover the practical basics.

  • Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion depends on the booking; no hotel parking, and early check-in or late checkout can cost extra.
