Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong pool-and-city combination, but not the pick for a sandy swimming beach. a large, upscale beachfront resort and convention hotel near downtown, scored for what it is.

This large, upscale beachfront resort is a strong pick if you want pool time without giving up access to Puerto Vallarta’s restaurants and downtown. Marriott describes refreshed rooms and public spaces, while recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the staff, well-kept grounds and family activities. Cleanliness is a particular strength, and the two outdoor pools make this more convincing as a pool-focused holiday than a beach-first escape.

The main compromise is the rocky, pebbly shoreline: we'd skip it if easy ocean swimming is the priority. Dining gets both enthusiastic praise and complaints about consistency. Check your booking carefully, too: room-only and all-inclusive plans coexist, and guests report confusion over inclusions and extra charges. Vacation-club sales approaches are another irritation worth anticipating.

• Best for: families who prioritize pools; couples mixing resort time with city exploring; conference travelers extending their stay

• Watch out for: rocky, pebbly beach; meal-plan exclusions and uneven dining; vacation-club sales approaches

• Location: Beachfront near downtown, with neighborhood dining accessible outside the resort.

• Rooms: Refreshed rooms and strong comfort ratings; select the view and room category carefully.

• Cleanliness: Strong across major sites, with frequent praise for maintained rooms, pools and grounds.

• Service: Warm restaurant and activities staff attract repeated praise; sales approaches can detract.

• Amenities: Two outdoor pools, kids’ club, tennis, gym and Maiavé Spa; no hotel airport shuttle.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is complimentary; verify meal-plan inclusions, restaurant supplements and paid spa treatments.
