Axel's take: 8.0/10

A strong beachfront budget pick, provided you can live with dated rooms. A simple, older 3-star beachfront hotel in the Romantic Zone, scored for what it is.

Tropicana is a simple, older 3-star hotel whose biggest advantage is being right on Los Muertos Beach, within walking distance of the Romantic Zone’s restaurants and bars. We'd pick it for affordable beach time rather than polished interiors: recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise the location, clean rooms and pool areas, while Booking.com’s overall ratings support a generally dependable stay. It’s good value if you spend more time outside than in your room.

The trade-offs are dated furnishings, some hard beds and service that gets warmer reviews than it does consistent ones. Room categories matter, so confirm your balcony and view rather than assuming every room has them. Expedia also lists a mandatory cleaning charge. We'd skip it if modern bathrooms, plush bedding or reliably polished service are priorities.

• Best for: Budget-minded beachgoers; Families wanting pools and beach access; Travelers exploring the Romantic Zone on foot

• Watch out for: Dated rooms and some hard beds; Balconies and views vary by room category; Mandatory cleaning charge

• Location: Directly on Los Muertos Beach, with restaurants, bars and the pier nearby.

• Rooms: Simple, aging interiors; confirm the exact category, balcony and view before booking.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength: Booking.com and Expedia both show solid cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Many guests praise helpful staff, but front-desk consistency is a recurring weakness.

• Amenities: Outdoor pools, a children's pool, beachfront lounging, restaurant, bar and free Wi-Fi.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a mandatory per-person nightly cleaning charge; breakfast and late checkout cost extra.
