Axel's take: 7.9/10

A clean, practical budget base near the beach, with compact rooms and few extras. a no-frills budget hotel in Puerto Vallarta’s 5 de Diciembre neighborhood, scored for what it is.

Hotel Mocali is a no-frills budget hotel in 5 de Diciembre, and we’d pick it for exploring Puerto Vallarta rather than spending days at the hotel. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently favor its cleanliness, helpful staff and walkable location. The beach is a few blocks away, with restaurants nearby and the Malecón within walking distance. Free parking and a rooftop terrace add practical value.

The trade-off is space and simplicity: recent Expedia guests describe some rooms as very small, while the hotel identifies standard doubles as interior rooms. There’s no elevator, so confirm your floor if stairs matter. Wi-Fi descriptions differ between the official site and booking listings; check room-level coverage if you need to work. It’s a good fit for budget-minded sightseeing, less so for travelers wanting spacious rooms or resort facilities.

• Best for: budget-minded beach and city explorers; travelers needing free parking; short, practical stays

• Watch out for: some very compact interior rooms; upper floors reached by stairs; confirm in-room Wi-Fi coverage

• Location: A few blocks from the beach, with restaurants nearby and the Malecón walkable.

• Rooms: Simple air-conditioned rooms; standard doubles face inward, while selected categories offer balconies.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com and Expedia feedback.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff are repeatedly praised; reception operates around the clock.

• Amenities: Free parking, rooftop terrace and business center; guests also mention complimentary morning coffee and toast.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is included; late checkout can cost extra, and late arrivals should be arranged ahead.
