Axel's take: 7.5/10

A good-value downtown base, provided you can live with noise and basic rooms. A traditional, budget 3-star in central Puerto Vallarta, scored for what it is.

Hotel Encino is a traditional, budget 3-star whose strongest selling points are its walkable downtown location and rooftop pool. We'd pick it for exploring the Malecón, Centro and Zona Romántica without relying on taxis. Recent Expedia and Google guests repeatedly praise the location, working air-conditioning and friendly staff; the rooftop terrace adds somewhere pleasant to unwind beyond your room. It's good value if you want a practical base rather than a resort.

The trade-offs are real: traffic and hallway noise recur in reviews, and rooms are simple, sometimes small, with aging furnishings and uneven maintenance. Cleanliness feedback is generally positive, rather than flawless. Check the room category carefully: the hotel's own site distinguishes no-view rooms from balcony rooms. We'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone expecting polished facilities and spacious accommodation.

• Best for: Budget-conscious downtown explorers; Travelers happy to get around on foot; Guests who value a rooftop pool

• Watch out for: Traffic and hallway noise; Small, basic rooms with variable upkeep; No on-site parking

• Location: Central riverside setting within walking distance of the Malecón, restaurants and Zona Romántica; not beachfront.

• Rooms: Simple air-conditioned rooms; several categories are just 15 square meters, and balconies depend on category.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised in recent reviews, with occasional housekeeping complaints rather than a dominant negative pattern.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring positive across Expedia, Booking.com and Google feedback.

• Amenities: Small rooftop pool, sun terrace and restaurant/bar; Booking.com guests rate Wi-Fi less favorably than other basics.

• Fees and surprises: No on-site parking; Booking.com lists a refundable damage deposit, so confirm arrival requirements.
