Axel's take: 8.0/10

Good-value suites and friendly staff, provided you can overlook tired rooms. A simple 3-star suite hotel in Mismaloya village, a short walk from the beach, scored for what it is.

Casa Iguana is a simple 3-star suite hotel in Mismaloya village, not a beachfront resort. We'd pick it for the roomy accommodation, leafy pool courtyard and easy walk to the beach and local buses. Recent Expedia and Hotels.com guests repeatedly praise the friendly staff and housekeeping, while Booking.com scores support its appeal for value. It's a strong option for travelers who want space and a village setting rather than an all-inclusive package.

The trade-off is condition: furnishings and bathrooms show their age, and guests continue to mention hard beds and uneven maintenance. Kitchenettes are useful, but don't assume every cooking essential will be supplied. Neighborhood music can disturb nights, and Booking.com's Wi-Fi rating is weak. We'd skip it if you need polished rooms, dependable remote-working internet or an elevator.

• Best for: Families wanting suite space on a budget; Beachgoers happy to walk; Travelers preferring village life to resorts

• Watch out for: Dated rooms and hard beds; Occasional neighborhood music at night; Weak Wi-Fi and no elevator

• Location: In Mismaloya village, roughly five to ten minutes on foot from the beach, with buses nearby.

• Rooms: Spacious, rustic suites with kitchenettes; condition and cooking equipment can be uneven.

• Cleanliness: Mostly positive recent housekeeping reports, despite some individual complaints about bugs and room condition.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent strength across guest-review sites.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, gardens and restaurant; do not count on reliable Wi-Fi.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion depends on the booking; pets require advance approval and carry an extra charge.
