Axel's take: 9.3/10

An intimate luxury stay whose service lives up to its Hollywood history. an adults-only luxury boutique hotel in historic hillside homes, scored for what it is.

Casa Kimberly is a nine-suite, adults-only luxury boutique hotel—not the ordinary three-star its listing suggests. Set in Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s former homes, it’s a strong pick for couples who prefer individual character to resort scale. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise immaculate rooms, attentive staff and excellent food. The ornate furnishings, courtyard pool and bay-view dining give the history substance rather than making it the whole attraction.

The main compromise is the hillside setting: the Malecón is walkable, but the return involves steep cobblestones and stairs. This is not a beachfront hotel. Suites differ considerably, so choose the actual room rather than assuming every category includes a sweeping view or terrace Jacuzzi. The restaurant also welcomes outside diners; light sleepers should ask about room placement. We’d skip it for easy beach access or effortless walking.

• Best for: couples celebrating an occasion; travelers who prefer intimate luxury; Hollywood-history enthusiasts

• Watch out for: steep uphill walks from town; not beachfront; views and outdoor space vary by suite

• Location: Historic Gringo Gulch setting above downtown; walkable to the Malecón, with a demanding uphill return.

• Rooms: Nine individually decorated suites; confirm the exact view, terrace and Jacuzzi arrangements before booking.

• Cleanliness: Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently describe immaculate, carefully maintained rooms.

• Service: Personal attention and helpful concierge staff are among the strongest recurring guest compliments.

• Amenities: Courtyard pool, spa and The Iguana restaurant; Hotels.com lists complimentary continental breakfast.

• Fees and surprises: No onsite parking; airport transfers cost extra, and late arrivals should be arranged ahead.
