#8 of 9 hotels in Playacar by Axel's take. Playacar is #5 of 7 places to stay in Playa del Carmen. The best hotels in Playacar, ranked · Where to stay in Playa del Carmen

Axel's take: 7.8/10

A lively beach bargain, with uneven dining and renovation dates to check. a value-focused beachfront all-inclusive in Playacar, scored for what it is.

Viva Maya is a value-focused beachfront all-inclusive, not a luxury retreat. It's a strong pick for travelers who put beach time and activities ahead of polished rooms or ambitious dining. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, friendly staff and energetic shows; the hotel's included watersports and trapeze add substance to the entertainment. Rooms are generally clean and comfortable, though some look dated.

Food gets mixed verdicts, specialty-restaurant reservations can be frustrating, and weak Wi-Fi and late-night noise recur in reviews. There is also disruption to check: lobby renovations are scheduled through October 20, 2026, while published advisories flag partial main-pool closures October 26–November 16, 2026. Confirm completion and pool access directly. We'd skip it for a quiet romantic escape or a food-first holiday.

  • Best for: value-minded beach vacationers; families who enjoy organized activities; sociable couples and friends

  • Watch out for: lobby renovations and scheduled main-pool work; uneven food and limited restaurant reservations; late-night noise and unreliable Wi-Fi

  • Location: Beachfront in Playacar, with shops nearby and downtown roughly a half-hour walk away.

  • Rooms: Functional, generally comfortable rooms with balconies or terraces; some furnishings feel dated.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guest reports.

  • Service: Friendly staff and entertainment teams earn repeated praise, though bar waits and reception draw complaints.

  • Amenities: Watersports, trapeze, shows and a kids' club suit active stays; confirm pool availability during renovations.

  • Fees and surprises: Local environmental tax is payable separately; the hotel lists extra charges for room safes and spa treatments.
