Axel's take: 7.5/10

Good family fun on a broad beach, but dated rooms and current closures temper the appeal. a sprawling, family-focused beachfront all-inclusive with an adults-only section, scored for what it is.

Sandos Playacar is a sprawling beachfront all-inclusive that works better as a family holiday base than a luxury escape. We'd consider it for the broad sandy beach, water parks and busy entertainment program. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise restaurant staff and family activities; room cleanliness generally earns better feedback than the property's condition.

The compromises are dated rooms, long walks from some accommodation blocks and recurring frustration securing à-la-carte reservations. Seaweed can also spoil beach days. Current advisories list half the Select Club pool closed through October 31, 2026, with 9 Miles, Riviera Blue, Gaucho breakfast and Ocean Front breakfast services expected back November 1. We'd skip it for polished luxury or an adults-only trip centered on that pool until reopening is confirmed.

• Best for: families who enjoy organized activities; beach lovers comfortable with a large resort

• Watch out for: Select Club pool partially closed through October 2026; long walks and difficult restaurant reservations; variable seaweed conditions

• Location: Beachfront in Playacar; some family rooms involve a substantial walk to the sand.

• Rooms: Spacious options for families, but dated décor and maintenance complaints recur.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength, although some recent guests report inconsistent floor and pool cleaning.

• Service: Restaurant and entertainment teams earn praise; reception and reservation handling are less consistent.

• Amenities: Water parks, clubs and shows; current pool and dining closures reduce choice, and Air Canada lists room service as discontinued.

• Fees and surprises: Environmental sanitation tax is payable on arrival; some facilities depend on room category, and spa treatments cost extra.
