Axel's take: 7.8/10

Renovated rooms and plentiful pools make this a better family pick than luxury escape. a sprawling, family-friendly 5-star all-inclusive beach resort, scored for what it is.

Grand Riviera Princess is a sprawling 5-star all-inclusive that works best as an activity-filled family resort, not a polished luxury retreat. Princess confirms it has reopened after refurbishment, and recent Expedia and Booking.com guests praise the updated, spacious rooms, cleanliness and helpful staff. With numerous pools, a water park, kids’ activities and shared facilities at Grand Sunset Princess, it’s a good pick for travelers who want plenty to do without leaving the grounds.

The compromises are food, distance and beach reliability. Recent reviews repeatedly flag repetitive buffets and difficulty securing specialty-restaurant reservations, though others enjoy the meals. The hotel puts the beach roughly 900 meters from the lobby, and summer guests report substantial seaweed. We’d skip it for a food-focused holiday, an intimate couples’ escape or if long walks would be difficult.

• Best for: families who prioritize pools and activities; groups wanting an extensive all-inclusive; travelers happy staying on resort

• Watch out for: long walks across the grounds; uneven dining and restaurant availability; seaweed can limit beach enjoyment

• Location: Beachfront outside central Playa del Carmen; the hotel offers a paid downtown shuttle.

• Rooms: Renovated, spacious rooms earn recent praise; swim-out and family configurations are available.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Expedia and Booking.com feedback.

• Service: Staff receive substantial praise, with some reports of uneven restaurant and bar service.

• Amenities: Extensive pools, water park, kids’ club, sports and entertainment; facilities shared with Grand Sunset Princess.

• Fees and surprises: Chill Out restaurant, spa treatments and airport transfers cost extra; Platinum privileges depend on room category.
