#4 of 9 hotels in Playacar by Axel's take. Playacar is #5 of 7 places to stay in Playa del Carmen. The best hotels in Playacar, ranked · Where to stay in Playa del Carmen

Axel's take: 8.5/10

Wildlife-rich grounds and warm service stand out, but it's currently closed for renovation. An upscale, family-friendly beachfront all-inclusive in Playacar, scored for what it is.

Tucán is an upscale family all-inclusive on Playacar’s beachfront, with jungle paths and roaming wildlife that give it more character than a conventional resort complex. Before its renovation closure, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praised the friendly staff, well-kept grounds, cleanliness and varied food. We'd shortlist it for families who want beach time, pools and activities rather than secluded luxury.

The immediate catch: the entire hotel is closed for refurbishment from May 15 through November 30, 2026; Iberostar schedules reopening for December 1, 2026. Older rooms were a recurring weakness, so the renovation is welcome, but its results remain untested by returning guests. Sargassum can also spoil beach days despite cleanup efforts. We'd skip it for travel before reopening, and wait for fresh guest feedback if polished rooms are your priority.

Best for: Families wanting an active beach vacation; Travelers who enjoy wildlife-filled grounds; All-inclusive guests prioritizing friendly service
Watch out for: Closed through November 30, 2026; Post-renovation experience remains untested; Sargassum can affect beach enjoyment
Location: Directly on Playacar’s beach, with Playa del Carmen accessible beyond the resort.
Rooms: Dated bedrooms drew recurring criticism before closure; refurbishment results are not yet guest-tested.
Cleanliness: A consistent strength in pre-closure feedback, including strong Booking.com and Expedia category ratings.
Service: Friendly restaurant, bar and entertainment staff attract repeated praise across guest sites.
Amenities: The advertised offering includes four pools, eight restaurants, Star Camp, a gym and a spa; all are unavailable during closure.
Fees and surprises: Spa treatments, diving and babysitting cost extra; some official room images depict future facilities.
