Axel's take: 8.3/10

Spacious rooms and helpful staff make this a strong Chalong base, not a beach escape. a simple 3-star residence-style hotel near Chalong Pier, scored for what it is.

Smile Residence is a simple 3-star residence-style hotel near Chalong Pier, and we'd pick it for practical comfort rather than holiday atmosphere. Hotels.com and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise spacious, clean rooms and friendly, helpful staff. Balconies, fridges and an outdoor pool add useful extras for the money. It's particularly sensible for divers using the pier or travelers with plans around southern Phuket.

The main compromise is the busy-road setting: recent feedback ranges from relatively quiet nights to intrusive traffic noise, and the swimming beaches require transport. Some guests find the beds firm. Cleanliness feedback is predominantly positive, though occasional ant reports warrant keeping food sealed. We'd skip it for a walk-to-the-beach holiday; for an affordable Chalong base, it delivers well.

  • Best for: divers using Chalong Pier; budget-conscious longer stays; travelers exploring southern Phuket

  • Watch out for: busy road and variable traffic noise; transport needed for swimming beaches; firm beds and occasional ant reports

  • Location: Near Chalong junction, restaurants and the pier; practical rather than beach-oriented.

  • Rooms: Spacious, simply furnished rooms with balconies, air-conditioning and fridges; beds can be firm.

  • Cleanliness: Mostly strong guest feedback, with occasional reports of ants and missed cleaning details.

  • Service: Friendly, accommodating staff are the most consistent strength across recent reviews.

  • Amenities: Officially lists an outdoor pool, gym, restaurant and free Wi-Fi; no indoor pool confirmed.

  • Fees and surprises: Hotels.com lists a per-stay cleaning fee; airport transfers and extra beds cost extra.
