Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong pool-and-views resort, but not an easy beach holiday. a five-star hillside resort overlooking Kamala Bay, scored for what it is.

Hyatt Regency Phuket is a five-star hillside resort we'd pick for pool time and sea views rather than a beachfront holiday. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the friendly staff, spacious rooms and extensive breakfast. The large infinity pool anchors the experience, while the kids club and marine activities give families more to do than swim. It's a strong choice if you're happy spending much of your stay on-site.

The hillside is the catch: expect steps and buggy rides, and use the shuttle or taxis for Kamala's main beach and restaurants. The rocky shore out front isn't a straightforward swimming beach. We'd skip it for step-free access or walk-out convenience. Etihad Holidays also flags neighboring apartment construction; ask which rooms face it before booking.

• Best for: families who enjoy resort activities; couples prioritizing sea views; pool-focused holidays

• Watch out for: steep grounds, stairs and buggy dependence; rocky shoreline rather than an easy swimming beach; reported neighboring apartment construction

• Location: Overlooks Kamala Bay, outside the main beach strip; shuttle or taxi trips make exploring easier.

• Rooms: Spacious rooms with balconies; ocean-view categories are a draw, but hillside access involves stairs.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback across Booking.com and Expedia, despite occasional housekeeping complaints.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are the most consistent strength across guest-review sites.

• Amenities: Large infinity pool, kids club, marine activities, spa and gym suit a resort-centered stay.

• Fees and surprises: A nightly incidental deposit is required; release can take up to 30 days. Confirm neighboring construction exposure.
