Axel's take on Kamala: #7 of 12 in Phuket, 5.6/10
A walkable beach village that balances quiet days with evening choices. Kamala wins on beach-village character and strong hotels, but poor value and limited access to the island’s main sights pull it down.
Kamala works particularly well if you want a beach holiday with a manageable village attached. The bay has a relaxed atmosphere, with restaurants, shops and ordinary holiday services close enough to make staying put enjoyable. It is a strong family choice and a sensible alternative for travelers who find Patong’s pace exhausting.
The distinction is between the beachfront village and more detached hillside stays. Around Rim Had Road, dinner and a drink can be an easy walk; elsewhere, transport becomes part of the routine. The northern beachfront also has DJ-led beach clubs, so Kamala is not uniformly sleepy. Skip it for serious shopping or if you expect a completely silent waterfront.
- Best for: families, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: You want extensive shopping; You expect every beachfront address to be quiet
- Getting around: Beachfront lanes are walkable; the HKT–Rawai Smart Bus serves Kamala on the main road, while taxis connect hillside stays.
- After dark: Relaxed beachfront dinners and small bars in the village; louder DJ evenings around the northern beach clubs.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $312 a night · usually 7% under the public rate

Where to look in Kamala
- Rim Had Road. Beachfront meals and village shops suit travelers who want dinner and a drink within an easy walk. Hotels here: Sunprime Kamala Beach, Kamala Resotel, Princess Kamala Beachfront Hotel, Thai Kamala Beach Front.
- Northern Kamala beach road. A more resort-led stretch with beach-club evenings; choose it for facilities, not the quietest waterfront nights. Hotels here: InterContinental Phuket Resort by IHG.
- Layi-Nakalay Road. The coastal headland favors views and staying put; village dinners and beach outings become planned trips. Hotels here: Paresa Resort Phuket, Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort.
How to choose
- Choose Paresa Resort Phuket if you want a secluded romantic pool suite and do not need direct beach access.
- Choose Sunprime Kamala Beach if you want an adults-only beachfront resort with village dining nearby, without paying luxury rates.
- Choose Kamala Resotel if you want a cheaper village base with a rooftop pool and a short beach walk.
What paying more buys
Thai Kamala Beach Front delivers sea-facing balconies cheaply, but has no pool and aging bathrooms. Sunprime Kamala Beach adds four pools and adults-only resort facilities while remaining cheaper than most here. Pricier Paresa buys spacious private-pool accommodation and attentive service, not better beach access; skip that premium if village walks and swimming in the sea are your priorities. Typical rates with Axel here run from $67 a night at Thai Kamala Beach Front to $1,601 at Villa Lomchoy (last 30 days).
