Axel's take: 8.5/10

Choose it for historic character and walkability, not guaranteed peace and quiet. A restored historic luxury hotel on Casco Viejo’s main square, scored for what it is.

Central is a restored historic luxury hotel on Plaza de la Independencia, and a strong pick for exploring Casco Viejo on foot. The hotel markets itself as five-star, rather than the catalog’s four. Its appeal is convincing: handsome architecture, a rooftop pool, and restaurants and landmarks right outside. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness, comfortable beds and breakfast; recent Expedia reviews are particularly positive about helpful staff.

The trade-off is that historic character doesn’t guarantee hushed luxury. Guests report street noise in square-facing rooms, while some Tripadvisor reviews flag sound from the atrium and uneven reception service. Room sizes vary, and the rooftop pool is better for cooling off than a pool-focused holiday. We’d choose it for a characterful city break, but light sleepers should request a quieter room. Confirm breakfast inclusion before booking: the official site and Expedia describe it differently.

• Best for: Couples on a historic city break; First-time visitors exploring on foot; Travelers who prefer character to a modern tower

• Watch out for: Street and atrium noise in some rooms; Small rooftop pool; Breakfast inclusion varies by booking

• Location: On Plaza de la Independencia, within walking distance of museums, churches and restaurants.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable, with good beds and air conditioning; size and noise exposure vary.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia guest reviews.

• Service: Mostly warm and helpful, though Tripadvisor guests report occasional reception delays and inconsistency.

• Amenities: Rooftop pool, spa, restaurants and a 24-hour gym; the pool is compact.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking costs extra; confirm breakfast inclusion because official and booking-site descriptions differ.
