Axel's take: 8.0/10

Choose it for downtown space and kitchens, not contemporary style. A practical 3-star apartment-style hotel in downtown Ottawa, scored for what it is.

Cartier Place is a practical 3-star apartment-style hotel whose strongest selling points are space, kitchens and a walkable downtown address. It's a strong pick for families and longer stays: Elgin Street restaurants and the Rideau Canal are close, while the indoor pool gives children something to do between sightseeing trips. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean suites, helpful staff and the convenient location.

The compromise is presentation. Guests on Booking.com and Expedia regularly describe dated interiors, although many also say they are comfortable and well kept. The hotel advertises some renovated suite categories, so check the exact room type rather than assuming every suite looks alike. Parking costs extra, and the garage has low clearance. We'd skip it if fresh design matters more than practical living space.

• Best for: Families wanting kitchens and a pool; Longer downtown stays; Sightseers exploring on foot

• Watch out for: Dated interiors in some suites; Paid parking; Low garage clearance

• Location: Between Elgin Street and the Rideau Canal, with restaurants and central sights within walking distance.

• Rooms: Kitchen-equipped studios and larger suites; condition and decor vary by category.

• Cleanliness: Recent reviews generally describe clean, well-kept accommodation despite the older interiors.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across recent guest accounts.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, gym, children's play areas and guest laundry.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and pets cost extra; a deposit applies, and garage clearance is 6 feet 2 inches.
