#5 of 9 hotels in Karen by Axel's take. Karen is #5 of 8 places to stay in Nairobi. The best hotels in Karen, ranked · Where to stay in Nairobi

Axel's take: 7.2/10

Friendly staff and garden appeal, but a reported closure makes booking inadvisable. a simple 3-star garden hotel near Nairobi National Park, scored for what it is.

Hotel Troy is a simple 3-star garden hotel near Nairobi National Park, with more appeal as a relaxed sightseeing base than a polished city hotel. There is an immediate catch: Expedia and Hotels.com list it as closed from July 3, 2026, to July 1, 2028, with dates subject to change. We'd choose somewhere else unless the hotel directly confirms it is operating. Its official homepage could not be loaded during research.

Before that closure window, guests repeatedly praised helpful staff and the leafy setting. Booking.com and Expedia ratings suggest generally good, rather than exceptional, stays. Room upkeep is the compromise: bathroom maintenance complaints recur, and a January 2026 Expedia guest described tired bathrooms and very firm beds. If it reopens, it could suit undemanding travelers visiting nearby wildlife attractions; skip it for reliably modern rooms or a central Nairobi base.

  • Best for: wildlife sightseeing after confirmed reopening; travelers prioritizing personal service over polish

  • Watch out for: reported closure through July 1, 2028; uneven bathroom and room maintenance; some rooms exposed to dining-area noise

  • Location: Convenient for Nairobi National Park and Karen-area attractions, rather than central-city stays.

  • Rooms: Simple accommodation; bathroom upkeep is a recurring weakness, with noise reported above dining areas.

  • Cleanliness: Generally positive aggregate cleanliness scores, although older individual reports describe uneven standards.

  • Service: The clearest strength: helpful, welcoming staff earn praise across Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia.

  • Amenities: Listings advertise an outdoor pool, restaurant, gardens, free Wi-Fi and parking; availability needs reconfirmation after reopening.

  • Fees and surprises: Airport transfers cost extra; Expedia and Hotels.com report closure from July 3, 2026, to July 1, 2028.
