Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong Old Town choice for Bavarian character, warm service and sightseeing on foot. a family-run 4-star superior hotel in Munich’s Old Town, scored for what it is.

Platzl is a family-run 4-star superior hotel that makes an excellent base for exploring Munich, with Marienplatz and the Hofbräuhaus a short walk away. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, clean rooms and generous breakfast. We'd choose it for traditional Bavarian character backed by dependable comfort, rather than big-hotel glamour. The restaurants, bar, sauna and gym give it substance beyond the address.

The main compromise is space: some guests find their rooms small for the price, so check the category carefully. Breakfast costs extra unless included in your booking, and the public garage cannot be reserved. The hotel has announced room redesigns for 2027; check the work schedule before booking those dates. We'd look elsewhere if spacious rooms or a quieter neighborhood matter more than sightseeing convenience.

• Best for: first-time Munich visitors; couples on a city break; travelers seeking Bavarian character

• Watch out for: some room categories feel compact; breakfast and parking cost extra; room redesigns planned for 2027

• Location: Central Old Town setting, an easy walk from Marienplatz, restaurants and public transport.

• Rooms: Comfortable, traditionally styled rooms with adjustable air conditioning; size varies by category.

• Cleanliness: Recent guest feedback is consistently positive about room cleanliness and upkeep.

• Service: Friendly, welcoming and helpful staff are a recurring strength across review sites.

• Amenities: Two restaurants, bars, a sauna area and boutique gym; initial minibar refreshments are included.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast is generally extra; paid public parking is unreservable; room redesigns are planned for 2027.
