Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong Old Town base, with standout breakfast rather than boutique charm. A practical 3-star Superior hotel in Munich’s Old Town, scored for what it is.

Mercure München Altstadt is a practical 3-star Superior hotel that gets the city-break essentials right. A few minutes from Marienplatz, it’s a strong pick for exploring Munich on foot. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the breakfast, helpful staff and cleanliness; Booking.com’s strong overall rating backs that picture. The hotel also includes breakfast and a daily replenished minibar—useful extras for this class.

The trade-off is personality and space: rooms are functional rather than atmospheric, and standard doubles are listed at 18 square meters. Parking means a paid public garage nearby, not an on-site hotel lot. We’d choose it for a comfortable sightseeing base, but skip it if spacious rooms and distinctive interiors are priorities.

• Best for: First-time Munich visitors; Couples on sightseeing breaks; Travelers exploring without a car

• Watch out for: Compact standard doubles; Functional rather than characterful interiors; Paid parking off-site

• Location: Excellent Old Town position, a short walk from Marienplatz and its rail connections.

• Rooms: Air-conditioned and practical; standard doubles are listed at 18 square meters.

• Cleanliness: Consistently praised in recent reviews; Booking.com scores cleanliness 9.0/10.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength across Expedia and Accor reviews.

• Amenities: Included buffet breakfast, complimentary replenished minibar and free Wi-Fi are the main extras.

• Fees and surprises: Public garage parking and pets cost extra; the official site says breakfast is included.
