Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong sightseeing base with friendly staff, but request a room away from traffic. a traditional 4-star city hotel in Bloomsbury, scored for what it is.

Thistle London Holborn is a traditional 4-star city hotel whose strongest asset is its position: the British Museum, West End theatres and several Tube lines are within easy walking distance. We'd pick it for a sightseeing break rather than a hotel-centered escape. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds, with breakfast also earning plenty of positive mentions.

The main compromise is noise: guests on both sites report traffic and sirens in rooms facing Bloomsbury Way, so light sleepers should request a rear-facing room. Standard doubles are a compact 16 square metres, despite some larger-room reviews suggesting otherwise. Some recent feedback also describes worn interiors; expect comfortable rather than uniformly polished surroundings. It's a strong practical choice, but we'd skip it if spacious entry-level rooms or dependable silence are priorities.

• Best for: museum and theatre breaks; first-time London sightseeing; travelers exploring without a car

• Watch out for: traffic noise in road-facing rooms; compact standard doubles; some reports of worn interiors

• Location: Excellent walking base for the British Museum and West End, with Holborn and Tottenham Court Road stations nearby.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds draw praise; standard doubles are 16 square metres, while Executive rooms offer substantially more space.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength, supported by recent guest feedback and solid cleanliness ratings across sites.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent positives in recent reviews.

• Amenities: On-site restaurant and bar, breakfast, room service, free Wi-Fi and air-conditioned rooms.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; no on-site parking, and early check-in or late checkout can carry fees.
