Axel's take: 8.9/10

Polished West End luxury with excellent facilities, but standard rooms feel tight. a contemporary 5-star luxury hotel on Leicester Square, scored for what it is.

The Londoner is a contemporary 5-star luxury hotel on Leicester Square, and a strong pick for a theatre-focused London break. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and central location. The substantial facilities distinguish it: an underground pool and spa, a rooftop bar, and guest-only Residence lounges with complimentary snacks and soft drinks make this more than somewhere to sleep between shows.

The main compromise is space. Standard King rooms measure 24 square metres, and several guests report cramped layouts and limited storage—worth taking seriously for longer stays. Leicester Square’s crowds also suit sightseeing better than a quiet neighbourhood escape. Spa access requires advance booking in one-hour slots, and the hotel lists a discretionary service charge. We'd choose it for a polished short break, but look elsewhere if generous rooms and calmer surroundings come first.

• Best for: West End theatre breaks; Couples wanting a spa and nightlife; First-time London sightseeing

• Watch out for: Compact standard rooms and limited storage; Busy Leicester Square surroundings; Pre-booked one-hour spa access

• Location: Excellent for theatres, Soho and central sights, with Leicester Square Underground a short walk away.

• Rooms: Modern and comfortable; entry-level Kings are 24 square metres, with recurring complaints about storage.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent guest feedback, backed by high Expedia cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff attract repeated praise across Tripadvisor and Expedia.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, sauna, steam room, 24-hour gym, several dining venues and guest-only lounges.

• Fees and surprises: The official site lists a discretionary 3.5% nightly service charge; valet parking costs extra.
